What are you good
at? What do you feel passionate about? Is there a hobby that takes up
every spare minute you have? Is there a subject about which you are highly
knowledgable? Do you enjoy aspects of your present job and could you do
these as a freelance? Do you enjoy using certain skills which could make
you money if you developed them further? If so, you could consider turning
your hobby into a small business.
Brainstorm
your current and potential skills and make a list of any businesses you could
start using these skills. Here are a few examples to get you started:
If
you're a fast typist with your own computer and knowledge of word processing,
database and spreadsheet software, you could start a secretarial service, providing
support for small local businesses and sole traders. Or you could study book-keeping
and help out with their accounts. If you are into the internet, you could learn
web design - small companies don't need a huge flashy site and don't want to pay
a fortune for what they do need.
If
you're a great cook you could cater small dinner parties, or create speciality
birthday cakes. If entertainment is your thing, perhaps you could provide kids
parties. If organisation is your talent, look around at the local community to
see what you could organise - trips to places of interest, activities during school
holidays. The secret is to find a different angle - something that makes your
service stand out from the others, your USP (unique selling point) which is the
factor that will make people buy your service or product rather than your competitors'.
Is
there something you could teach on a one-to-one basis, or via a postal or on-line
training course?
Making
money on the internet is another possibility. There is an enormous range of material
out there to help you on your way, but
it can be pretty overwhelming, and just about everyone and his dog is telling
you about the greatest offer since sliced bread, which you've just got to buy
into by midnight tonight. The best way to learn about selling on the internet,
is to learn from those who are already successful. For those of you interested
in becoming affiliates, this book is hard to beat - no hype, no false promises,
just tons of practical advise from someone who is doing very well as an affiliate
